We're Out of Washington State

We're in Pendleton, Oregon tonight.  It's in the high 80's and we are enjoying the thunder and lightning.  The wind gusts have been replaced with a few big rain drops.

We had a leisurely start to the morning and got on the road at 11:00.  We drove through Prosser and crossed over the Columbia River to find a two lane road that followed the river down it's East side.  It was definitely a "road less traveled".

It was a good choice for a winding scenic road.  Traffic was very light making it easy to drive and enjoy the great views.  Terri kicked back, put her feet up and watched the world go by.

The Columbia is one BIG river.

I will always notice a marina. Can't get that out of my blood.
We followed the river for about an hour until a "black line road" came along.  It was a 34 mile back road into Pendleton.  We went from apples, vineyards and corn to dry land wheat farming.  When I say wheat I mean rolling fields as far as the eye could see.

So how far out in the boondocks is this?  They still have the glass insulators on all the power poles. Some of the places didn't even have power poles.

The only town along this road was Holdman.  It was an abandoned grain silo, an intersection and a school that had been closed for decades.  There must not be any bad kids in town because there were only a few broken windows in the old school house.  Maybe there were no kids left in town.

Burns Mortuary

As we came into the back side of Pendleton I noticed this old mortuary.  I had to wonder if they specialized in cremations.

We plan to spend tomorrow on "black line roads" going South through Eastern Oregon.  We'll spend the night in the mountains so don't expect a blog until the next day.

Random Picture of the Day:
My Dad - Billy Ranger
Us kids all thought he was to old to be water skiing.
He must have been almost forty.
It doesn't seem to me that's to old, now.
