Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon

Terri and Eva walking through Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon.
I apologize right up front for a very long blog today.  To much good stuff happened today.  Some days are regular and uneventful.  Today was an awesome day.

We were up earlier than planned this morning and left Kanab to find our new boondocking spot for the rest of this week.  We drove out highway 89 until we came to the road that led to Coral Pink Dunes.  We found our spot on the 17 mile road through BLM land.

We are backed into the pink sand on a 4x4 off road path.  There is no one for miles around us, true peace and quite.  And just behind us in the canyon we have our own Hoodoo.

A Hoodoo is a stack of very large rocks balanced for centuries.
Eva immediately was in love with the acres of running room.  She ran until she was ready to fall over.

We were all moved-in and set-up by 10:30.  We packed a picnic lunch and headed out to do a hike to a slot canyon I had read about.  My research said it would be a 2.5 hike one way into the canyon and than about a half mile walk through the slot canyon.  We were ready for a 6 mile hike.

When we arrived at the trailhead we read the posted info.  It was 4.5 miles downhill through sand to get to where we wanted to be.  That meant 4.5 miles uphill to get back for a total of 10 miles.  We were disappointed but we knew that was well out of our range.

There were 6 or 7 families camping at the trailhead.  It turned out to be a group that travels fulltime with their families.  They all home school the 13 kids from those families.  We struck up a conversation with one of the fathers and I ask him if anyone would be interested in taking us to Peek-A-Boo on one of the quads we saw parked beside the RV's.

It turned out that Tyler was interested.  He is one of the nicest 15 year old fellows I've ever met.  His mom and us talked for awhile and she agreed to her son being our tour guide.

They had a brand new 4x4 Razor that Tyler could drive like a pro.  We were off.

Now I would have shot pictures of the ride into the slot canyon but I was to busy holding on tight.  It was an exciting and fun ride.  Terri and Eva held on in the back seat.

Now remember this can be an active river if it rains heavily.  As we walked the riverbed for a half mile we could see logs wedged into the narrow channel during flash floods.

Many time we could touch both walls at the same time.  The walls reached up 100 feet in places.  In the dark sections it felt like being in an air conditioned tunnel.  Other parts were sunny and bright as the wall angles lined up with the sunshine.

Looking up for sunlight.
It was a reasonably easy walk with a few scrambles and climbs over boulders that had washed down and were trapped in the passageway.

Eva got to wander and explore on her own on our walk back through the slot.

Working our way back to where we began.
Great rock formations as we came out.

It was a great day.  It was a great hike.  It was a great Razor ride.  It was a great time with a great kid.  We can't thank him and his family enough, they made our day.  We hope the bucks we gave him will help him get to scout camp.

As always.... life is good and today was even better.
