Shark Attack, Almost

Snorkeling spectators. The Ranger gals.
We drove down a dirt road to a black sand beach to snorkel this morning.  There were only a few people there so we had the bay to ourselves most of the time.  Brother Dave had found this Maui beach several years ago and it is his favorite place to snorkel.

A mile of beach to ourselves.
To the South.
To the North.
The girls lounged under their red umbrella and enjoyed the sunny warm breezes.  While we were there two divers came ashore with their catches.  One fish was over two feet long and about 15 pounds.

Time to jump in.
The ocean is as warm as a swimming pool.  Immediately we began seeing schools of fish, every color in the rainbow.  As we swam out about a quarter mile we encountered a Green Turtle.  As he began to swim we followed him.  We followed for about ten minutes until he lost us.

After snorkeling we drove through the lava flows to the end of the road.  We found the small cove we are going to tomorrow.

The lava flows into the Pacific.
Now for the shark story.  Dave wanted one more snorkel outing before we left the beach, so he went out by himself.  After a few minutes we noticed him swimming rapidly toward the shore.  When he got back to us he reported that a White Fin Shark had passed a few feet under him.  In the first telling of the story the shark was 5 feet long.  As the day went on the shark grew with each telling of the tale.  By tomorrow the massive Great White will be 5 meters.  It is a Ranger telling the story after all.

Life is good....with all your fingers and toes.
