We got an early start this morning due to the predicted weather. Wind and dust storms were coming in the afternoon. An early start meant easier driving without white knuckles. It was a good plan.
The oil wells are everywhere in West Texas. With the new technology of "Fracking" the oil business is booming here. It seems like every third vehicle on the highway is a tanker truck. We must have seen 1,000 wells in our 150 miles today.
If you had to describe West Texas the kindest words would be, "It's flat". I'll let my opinion stop right there. If it weren't for oil and cows no one would live here.
We crossed the state line into Texas around 10:00am and were to Fort Stockton by noon. We decided to call it a day early and began the search for an RV park. After a few duds and an unanswered phone call, we drove back to a Walmart we had passed in town.
There were already a half dozen RV's parked and waiting for the winds to start in earnest. We were not disappointed. Within an hour we saw the dust storm coming over the horizon. As the winds increased more RV's showed up. The outer lot now had about a dozen RV's hunkered down and going nowhere. We were rocking in the gusts again. The right winds can shake a 20,000 pound RV pretty well.
By sundown the winds subsided and we are spending our first night ever in a Walmart parking lot. The upside to this is Dryers double chocolate ice cream. I went shopping for a few items and a quart jumped into my shopping cart.
When I got back to the motorhome I told Terri she didn't have to have any ice cream if she didn't want any. She laughed at me. When I finish writing this I'll go dish us up a bowl.
We'll be leaving early tomorrow for Kerrville, Texas. Then it is on to San Antonio to meet up with Tom and Diana Makins who will be in Texas this week. Tom and Diane are regular visitors to Mazatlán each November with our family clan. Let the San Antonio party begin.
Life is good and Texas is flat.
Time for ice cream.
