Luxembourg & Dinant

We took a bus from Brussels to the country of Luxembourg on Sunday.  It was about 3 hours South of son Matt's home in Brussels.  The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg has an area of 998 square miles, it is one of the smallest sovereign states in Europe, about the same size as the state of Rhode Island.  Almost everyone works in the banking industry.  Unfortunately I didn't have a large bag of cash that I needed to hide away so we just enjoyed a day of being tourists.

Looking down from the upper part of Luxembourg City to the old village down by the river.
We walked the several miles of paths that led downhill to visit the village below.  It was a walk with great views at every turn.

Finally at river level.
Shari was worried about the walk back up, but we found a tunnel into the rock cliff that had an elevator that brought us back up to the city.

It was a day of walking. 5 miles on cobble stones makes your feet tired.
It was May 1st so they were celebrating May Day.  As we were sitting in front of the cathedral the church bells began ringing.  I have never heard so many bells ring so long and so loud. Glorious!

It wasn't the Pope, maybe the Arch Bishop?
We had lunch in the town square.
After finishing our visit to Luxembourg we drove to the small town of Dinant in the Belgium countryside.  We were only able to spend a short time here so I know we will be back for a longer walking visit.

Dinant is a beautiful village.  Next time we will go up to the fortress on the cliff.
One of the claims to fame for this town is the saxophone.  It was invented here by Adolph Sax in the 19th century.

Terri and the sax man.

We will have to cover a few more towns in the next blog.  We have been spending more time seeing things than I've had time to write about.  That seems best, see more, write less.

We are having a fine time.  Life is good.
